Discover Ungasan: Bali’s Cliffside Paradise Where Luxury Meets Authentic Island Living

For decades, Bali has enchanted travellers with its lush rice terraces, sacred temples, world-famous surf beaches and extraordinary hospitality. Yet as destinations like Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud continue to grow in popularity, many discerning travellers are searching for a quieter, more authentic side of the Island of the Gods.

The answer lies on Bali’s dramatic southern coastline.

Nestled on the spectacular Bukit Peninsula, Ungasan has quietly emerged as one of the island’s most exciting luxury destinations. Home to towering limestone cliffs, hidden white-sand beaches, ancient temples and some of Bali’s finest oceanfront resorts, this peaceful enclave offers everything visitors love about Bali—without the crowds.

For travellers looking to experience the island at a slower, more meaningful pace, Ungasan delivers the perfect balance of luxury, culture and untouched natural beauty.

Why Ungasan Is Bali’s Best-Kept Secret

While Seminyak is synonymous with beach clubs and shopping, and Canggu attracts surfers and digital nomads, Ungasan feels refreshingly different.

Here, dramatic cliff tops replace busy streets. Endless ocean panoramas replace traffic. Instead of crowded beaches, visitors discover secluded coves with crystal-clear water and powder-soft white sand.

The Bukit Peninsula has long been favoured by those who know Bali well. It offers easy access to the airport while feeling wonderfully removed from the bustle of the island’s busiest tourist centres.

For first-time visitors planning their island itinerary, our comprehensive Bali travel guide offers inspiration on combining Bali’s iconic highlights with lesser-known destinations like Ungasan.

As luxury travellers increasingly prioritise wellness, privacy and authentic cultural experiences over packed itineraries, Ungasan represents the future of high-end travel in Bali.

Melasti Beach: Bali’s Most Beautiful Stretch of Sand?

No visit to Ungasan is complete without experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Melasti Beach.

Often considered one of Bali’s most spectacular beaches, Melasti is reached via an extraordinary winding road carved directly into towering limestone cliffs. The drive alone has become one of Bali’s most Instagrammed experiences, with dramatic white rock formations opening onto impossibly turquoise water below.

Unlike many of Bali’s better-known beaches, Melasti remains surprisingly uncrowded.

Its calm waters make it ideal for swimming, paddleboarding and relaxing beneath the tropical sun, while sunset transforms the cliffs into glowing shades of gold and amber.

Positioned directly above this incredible coastline is Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts, where guests enjoy uninterrupted Indian Ocean views alongside exclusive access to the resort’s stylish Uma Beach House.

It’s the kind of location that reminds visitors why Bali continues to captivate travellers from around the world.

A Different Side of Bali Luxury

Luxury in Bali has evolved.

Today’s travellers increasingly seek spacious villas, personalised experiences and meaningful connections with local culture rather than simply five-star facilities.

Ungasan embodies this new definition of luxury perfectly.

Instead of crowded resorts, visitors discover expansive private villas overlooking the ocean. Morning yoga replaces morning traffic. Evenings are spent watching sunsets over the Indian Ocean instead of navigating busy streets.

Those exploring luxury accommodation across the island can also discover the timeless elegance of Regent Bali, the artistic heritage of Tanah Gajah, Ubud or the iconic cliffside glamour of the Bvlgari Resort Bali.

Each offers its own distinctive interpretation of Balinese luxury, yet Ungasan provides something increasingly rare: genuine tranquillity.

Beyond the Beach: Exploring the Bukit Peninsula

While Melasti Beach is undoubtedly a highlight, Ungasan is perfectly positioned for discovering some of Bali’s most iconic attractions.

Just minutes away sits Uluwatu Temple, dramatically perched on towering sea cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. Dating back to the 11th century, the temple is among Bali’s most sacred spiritual sites and becomes particularly magical at sunset when visitors gather to watch the famous Kecak Fire Dance against an unforgettable ocean backdrop.

Nearby, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park showcases one of Indonesia’s most recognisable landmarks—the monumental Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue—alongside traditional Balinese performances, exhibitions and cultural events.

Adventure seekers are equally well catered for.

The Bukit Peninsula is home to world-famous surf breaks including Padang Padang, Bingin and Dreamland Beach, while scenic coastal walks, ATV adventures and hidden coves offer endless opportunities to explore Bali’s spectacular southern coastline.

Travellers wanting to continue their journey across Indonesia can also escape to the idyllic Gili Meno, where pristine beaches and barefoot luxury create the perfect complement to a Bali itinerary.

Experiencing Balinese Culture in Ungasan

One of Ungasan’s greatest strengths is its connection to authentic Balinese traditions.

Unlike some of Bali’s more commercial destinations, local ceremonies remain an important part of everyday life.

Throughout August, villages celebrate Odalan, colourful temple anniversaries marked by elaborate offerings, traditional dress and community gatherings.

The nearby Melasti Temple and Batu Pageh Temple host beautiful full moon ceremonies, while Indonesia’s Independence Day on 17 August sees villages come alive with parades, performances and traditional games.

Between July and October, weather permitting, the skies above southern Bali fill with enormous handcrafted kites during the annual Bali Kite Festival—one of the island’s most visually spectacular cultural celebrations.

These moments provide visitors with a genuine glimpse into Bali’s deeply spiritual identity beyond the beaches and luxury resorts.

Umana Bali: Redefining Luxury on Bali’s Southern Cliffs

Perched high above Melasti Beach, Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts represents a new generation of luxury hospitality in Indonesia.

As the first LXR Hotels & Resorts property in Southeast Asia, the resort embraces the ancient Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, creating harmony between nature, humanity and spirituality.

Its 72 expansive all-pool villas are among the largest on the island, beginning at an impressive 403 square metres.

Each villa features:

  • A private infinity pool
  • Heated outdoor jacuzzi
  • Spacious indoor and outdoor living areas
  • Panoramic Indian Ocean or tropical valley views
  • Personalised Curator service

Families travelling together will appreciate the remarkable Uma Ocean Estate, a spectacular three-bedroom residence spanning 1,200 square metres complete with private entertainment spaces, expansive terraces and unforgettable ocean vistas.

Children are equally well looked after, with complimentary breakfast, dedicated activities at the Anjali Kids Club, and generous dining benefits for younger guests.

Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to allow families, couples and groups to enjoy Bali at their own pace.

A Culinary Journey Inspired by Bali

Dining forms an integral part of every stay at Umana Bali.

At Oliverra, Mediterranean cuisine takes centre stage with fresh local ingredients showcased against sweeping ocean views.

At Uma Beach House, Japanese precision meets vibrant Peruvian flavours in a relaxed beachfront setting perfect for leisurely afternoons.

For those eager to immerse themselves in Indonesian gastronomy, guests can participate in traditional Balinese cooking classes, enjoy communal rijsttafel feasts at Commune Restaurant or discover the fascinating heritage of locally distilled arak through guided tastings at Pad Bar.

Romantic experiences are equally memorable.

Floating breakfasts served beside private villa pools, bespoke in-villa barbecues beneath the stars and intimate sunset dinners overlooking the Indian Ocean transform every meal into a celebration.

Those venturing further along the Bukit coastline should also experience the spectacular dining scene at Ulu Cliffhouse, one of Bali’s most iconic cliffside venues.

The Perfect Base for Exploring Bali

Although Ungasan feels wonderfully secluded, its location makes it an excellent base for exploring southern Bali.

Seminyak’s boutiques and beach clubs remain within comfortable driving distance, while Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Uluwatu can all be reached with ease.

Travellers seeking stylish accommodation elsewhere on the island may also enjoy Villa Ketut in Seminyak, offering a completely different perspective on Bali’s vibrant coastal lifestyle.

Meanwhile, readers looking for broader inspiration can explore our complete collection of Bali destination guides or discover the island’s artistic soul in The Bohemian Bali.

Together, they reveal why Bali continues to evolve while never losing the timeless magic that has captivated travellers for generations.

Why Ungasan Is Bali’s Next Great Luxury Destination

As travel trends continue to shift towards wellness, authenticity and meaningful experiences, Ungasan has quietly positioned itself as one of Bali’s most compelling destinations.

Its combination of breathtaking scenery, uncrowded beaches, rich cultural heritage and exceptional luxury accommodation offers something increasingly difficult to find elsewhere on the island: space.

Space to reconnect.

Space to slow down.

Space to experience Bali on your own terms.

Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family holiday or simply searching for a more peaceful alternative to Bali’s bustling tourist hubs, Ungasan delivers an unforgettable experience where dramatic landscapes, warm Balinese hospitality and world-class luxury come together in perfect harmony.

For travellers seeking the Bali of tomorrow—without sacrificing everything that has made the island legendary—Ungasan may well be the destination you’ve been waiting to discover.

Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare or a grand lobby to announce its presence. That is exactly how Finca Victoria arrived in Sa Riera—a restored estate where the pine-covered hills and Mediterranean set the tone before you even step inside.

Opened in 2025 after careful renovation of a historic property, it captures something rare on the Costa Brava: the feeling of having discovered a corner that hasn't yet lost its soul. Just thirty-eight rooms, all adults over fourteen, spread across what feels more like a private summer house than a resort determined to impress from the first moment. The central cloister anchors everything, with warm stone arches, ceramics, and Catalan tuff flooring that gives you a sense of place without leaning too hard on nostalgia.

The food alone tells you this was done with intention. AlKostat del Mar, led by chef Jordi Vilà, serves seasonal Catalan cooking rooted in local produce and fire. A rice dish can become the reason you're traveling somewhere new. Breakfast stretches from eight until eleven with made-to-order hot options alongside a carefully edited buffet—eggs Benedict with salmon, avocado toast, regional specialties like black butifarra with beans—that makes rushing feel unnecessary.

But what lingers is the room itself. In our Terrace Suite, nearly sixty square metres overlooked both sea and the rolling hills of Begur. The bathroom held both bathtub and rainfall shower. An outdoor shower faced sideways toward the horizon. These details don't shout; they settle into your memory slowly.

Spa appointments run through the Victoria Wellness Spa with water circuits, saunas, jacuzzis, and sensory treatments—all requiring advance booking, which somehow makes the peace even sweeter when you arrive. Morning yoga happens inside one of the suites, sunlight filling the space as you ground yourself into the day rather than race through it.

There is a complimentary shuttle to Begur village until late evening, and the beach is literally a short walk away. Private boat trips can be arranged for up to six people. Paddleboards, loungers, anything on the water the hotel can help coordinate through external partners. Yet even with
