THE BOHEMIAN BALI: A Hotel Review of Canggu’s Hidden Gem

The Boheamian Bali

The Bohemian Bali:Where Island Vibes Meet Soulful Serenity

Bali is no stranger to stylish stays, but there’s something about The Bohemian Bali that feels especially magnetic — like you’ve stumbled upon a secret where design, comfort and a dash of irreverence come together in one beautiful breath. Nestled down an unassuming alley in the heart of bustling Canggu lies this hidden gem I’m almost reluctant to share.

The Bohemian, part of www.designhotels.com, truly lives up to its namesake — a bohemian by definition being someone interested in art, music and literature who lives in a very informal way. But make no mistake, there’s nothing casual about the remarkable attention to detail found in every corner of this architectural masterpiece. It leans into that eclectic, soulful aesthetic — but without tipping into the cliché that is unfortunately becoming a Bali trend. It’s a confident mix of rough and refined: textured walls, bold tiles, handpainted murals, locally sourced timber, an incredibly special oasis.

The Boheamian Bali

First Impressions

As we followed our host down the large organic stone pathway, the outside world melted away. There’s a subtlety in the way it greets you — low-key, relaxed, with an undercurrent of intention.

The Brutalist-inspired structure stands like a contemporary art gallery where raw industrial elements harmonise with tropical serenity. What was once envisioned as an abandoned warehouse transformed into a Balinese sanctuary showcases high ceilings, a reception room with a steel spiral staircase, textured surfaces and an abundance of natural light that creates an immediate sense of spaciousness and calm. Art is thoughtfully sprinkled throughout every corner of the hotel—from the entranceways to the bedrooms and even into the bathrooms—creating an immersive gallery-like experience that unfolds as you explore.

We stayed in Number Three, the Pool Loft Suite, and my first step inside left me breathless. Pictures simply cannot capture the magic of this space. Cathedral-like ceilings soared above us while sensually textured wooden treads on the statement staircase beckoned us upward to our cosy loft bedroom. The oversized stunning chandeliers and industrial pendants, hung dramatically in the triple-height void, casting a warm glow that perfectly complemented the dark, moody, sophisticated palette.

The fusion of industrial elements with decadent details created a harmony I found myself mentally cataloging for future inspiration. Every finish felt intentional — from the artisanal ceramics by Kevala and ‘The Other Project’ cups to the perfectly positioned artwork by local creatives like Quint and YOKII. The oversized pots filled with lush greenery brought the tropical outdoors in, creating a seamless connection to the private sanctuary pool that awaited through floor-to-ceiling sliding doors.

What I loved most about the entire property was the sense of play and how relaxed it was— nothing was overly precious. There’s a beautiful balance between privacy and shared space here. You could wander barefoot, sit at the communal table, eat your food, hang on poolside loungers, take your coffee on the bench. The whole property is designed for living, not posing.

Excellent Service That Goes Beyond

The Bohemian understands that Bali is a place of rituals and faith. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a ceremonial bracelet-tying, our host softly sharing wishes for prosperity and health as she placed the twisted threaded bands on our wrists. This warm welcome extended throughout our stay in so many special ways.

What sets The Bohemian apart is service that feels familial rather than formal. The staff remembered our preferences after just one interaction. Each meal was delivered to our suite with reverence — not simply dropped off, but elegantly presented on our already set dining table like an artistic installation, delicate flowers precisely placed atop culinary creations that tasted as extraordinary as they looked.

Communication was effortless via WhatsApp, with staff anticipating needs before we even realised them. During evening turndown, they didn’t just draw the many dramatic floor-to-ceiling linen curtains that cascaded in textured folds from ceilings, but also covered the poolside daybed and refreshed the mosquito coils with a pleasant lavender scent wafting through the air. The hotel’s complimentary buggy service (available 8am-8pm) made exploring Canggu effortless, though we found ourselves increasingly reluctant to leave our private oasis.

An Open Kitchen With Delicious Dishes

The Bohemian engages every sense. Their curated “Bohemian Beats” playlists evolved perfectly throughout the day — from morning’s gentle world music to afternoon’s laid-back acoustic melodies and evening’s rhythmic energy. The “Go Easy” playlist, with its soulful blues vocals and chilled beats, became our personal soundtrack.

The recently added communal Eatery, accessible only to the hotel’s guests, offered a delightful extension of the Bohemian experience. The open kitchen concept allowed us to watch the talented chefs crafting meals that were as visually stunning as they were delicious. The modern Bohemian design of the space blended natural elements with artistic touches, creating a stylish yet relaxed setting for morning coffee or evening cocktails.

Even with the lure of Canggu’s renowned dining scene just steps away, we found ourselves ordering in more often than expected. The Bohemian’s menu, featuring locally sourced ingredients prepared with both traditional techniques and contemporary flair, proved divine.

Thoughtful Design & A Focus on Sustainability

With just six suites (originally four, with two additional rooms and a communal pool added in October), The Bohemian offers genuine exclusivity. Four suites feature private plunge pools within tropical garden courtyards, while two poolside suites overlook the communal swimming area.

The vision brought to life by architect Josefina Gruenwald with interior design by Nyree McKenzie and Fransisca Simon brilliantly creates spaces that feel both dramatic and comforting. The well-appointed kitchen with cocktail-making accessories, the rotating Smart TV, pillow menu options, and bathroom amenities that went beyond the expected (including thoughtful additions like sleep masks and safe sex kits) revealed a deep understanding of what makes a space truly livable.

The Bohemian also takes sustainability seriously, generating 30% of its energy from solar cells and 100% of its hot water from a solar-powered heat pump. Their eco-friendly electric shuttle service, natural cleaning products, and partnerships with local artisans demonstrate a genuine commitment to responsible tourism.

A Bittersweet Farewell

When the time came to leave, another beautiful ritual unfolded. We were gifted lava stone bracelets to remember our stay and offered a polaroid memento, with our permission for one copy to join their growing family photo wall. As our driver arrived, the team waved goodbye as if sending off dear friends.

The Bohemian has mastered what so many luxury properties strive for but few achieve — creating a space that feels simultaneously indulgent and like home. Whether you’re seeking solitude, romance, or reconnection, this boutique artistic hideaway doesn’t just offer accommodation; it delivers a transformative experience that lingers long after departure. You leave with more than just memories—your heart and soul feel richer and fuller, filled with gratitude for the magic this remarkable team has created.

Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare or a grand lobby to announce its presence. That is exactly how Finca Victoria arrived in Sa Riera—a restored estate where the pine-covered hills and Mediterranean set the tone before you even step inside.

Opened in 2025 after careful renovation of a historic property, it captures something rare on the Costa Brava: the feeling of having discovered a corner that hasn't yet lost its soul. Just thirty-eight rooms, all adults over fourteen, spread across what feels more like a private summer house than a resort determined to impress from the first moment. The central cloister anchors everything, with warm stone arches, ceramics, and Catalan tuff flooring that gives you a sense of place without leaning too hard on nostalgia.

The food alone tells you this was done with intention. AlKostat del Mar, led by chef Jordi Vilà, serves seasonal Catalan cooking rooted in local produce and fire. A rice dish can become the reason you're traveling somewhere new. Breakfast stretches from eight until eleven with made-to-order hot options alongside a carefully edited buffet—eggs Benedict with salmon, avocado toast, regional specialties like black butifarra with beans—that makes rushing feel unnecessary.

But what lingers is the room itself. In our Terrace Suite, nearly sixty square metres overlooked both sea and the rolling hills of Begur. The bathroom held both bathtub and rainfall shower. An outdoor shower faced sideways toward the horizon. These details don't shout; they settle into your memory slowly.

Spa appointments run through the Victoria Wellness Spa with water circuits, saunas, jacuzzis, and sensory treatments—all requiring advance booking, which somehow makes the peace even sweeter when you arrive. Morning yoga happens inside one of the suites, sunlight filling the space as you ground yourself into the day rather than race through it.

There is a complimentary shuttle to Begur village until late evening, and the beach is literally a short walk away. Private boat trips can be arranged for up to six people. Paddleboards, loungers, anything on the water the hotel can help coordinate through external partners. Yet even with
