High-end casual Billy Ho sets the restaurant bar in Canggu with flavours from Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong.
Will Meyrick who is known as ‘the street food chef’ has been busy in Bali with four of the island’s best and most authentic restaurants including MamaSan, Sarong, Hujan Locale and his latest venue, Billy Ho. Located in BatuBolong, Billy Ho is one of Canggu’s newest high-end casual restaurants which has raised the dining bar in the increasingly popular area.
Billy Ho’s Food & Drinks
Inspired from a trip to Japan, Meyrick has together with Head Chef Tim Bartholomew created a fun, tasty and unique menu with influences from not only Japan but also South Korea and Hong Kong. Served up on beautiful plates the dishes range from sushi to larger shared plates. The pork and cabbage gyozas with miso, green shallots, and black vinegar are fantastic and it’s not hard to see why it’s one of the favourite dishes on the menu. Another superb starter is the Wagyu beef tartare with miso eggplant, tabasco, and smoked mackerel mayonnaise served with potato nori chips. For sushi enthusiasts, the ‘Dragon Roll’ tempura king prawn with avocado, wasabi mayonnaise, and furikake is just as pretty as it is tasty and perfect to share. For main course, the glazed red miso gindara with shiitake mushroom is light and fresh and the miso aged chicken thigh with seared cabbage and shichimi umeboshi is cleverly presented over a small grill still cooking when served. There are plenty of delicious side dishes that can be paired with any of the dishes, such as the stir fry broccoli with garlic.
The extensive cocktail list is full of classics with a twist and the restaurant’s own ‘Billy Ho Collection’ including ‘Lost in Kyoto’ which is a mix of gin, sake, raspberry pure and egg white. One of the most popular cocktails is the ‘Toasted Marshmellow Martini’ which is served with coconut foam and tastes just as delicious as the name suggests. There’s also a range of Australian and New Zealand craft beers on the menu as well as a great selection of wines.
Billy Ho’s Interior & Atmosphere
The restaurant interior is as impressive as the food. The ceiling boasts black painted large bamboo sticks and the walls decorated with contemporary drawings. Perhaps most impressive is the wooden wall, carved out to look like fish scales, which is painted in all the colours of the rainbow. The atmosphere is stylish yet relaxed and the service is friendly and professional. Dinners are the busiest time for the restaurant which is filling up quickly. However, don’t dismiss lunch. The lunch menu is fantastic and definitely a great place for a tasty midday meal, a nice drink, and a cheeky dessert.
Why you should visit Billy Ho
Billy Ho is a must-visit restaurant if you are in the area, or even if you have to travel to get here. The table configuration lends itself to both intimate romantic dinners, big family lunches and meals shared among a larger (or smaller) group of friends. The food is very much high-end, although reasonably priced and the atmosphere friendly and casual which turns out to be a winning combination!
