Hotel Design/Overall
Clean, neat lines and furnishings are throughout Maidens Hotel. The entire space feels as fresh and new as it would have been when it was first built in 1903. Original chandeliers heighten the sense of luxury; glowing and effervescent in the evenings, casting a romantic air across the hotel.
Splaying palms speckle the corridors and history is brought to life by the many black and white photographs of the great names who have stayed here. At 55 rooms, Maiden’s never feels crowded and you can even stay in the suite that Sir Lutyens occupied whilst he was planning New Delhi!
The Banquet Hall boasts high ceilings and has seen many a prestigious event. Morning yoga classes are held here, where a qualified instructor guides you through a gentle Hatha practice that leaves you feeling aligned and centred.
Restaurant/Breakfast
The Garden Terrace is where you find breakfast and lunch. Overlooking the immaculately manicured gardens, the terrace offers a view of a magnificent 200-year-old Banyan Tree. Regal peacocks roam free across the gardens and a wide variety of birdsong makes you feel far removed from Delhi.
Breakfast includes everything you could wish for, from traditional Indian selections to continental and English options. Plenty of fresh fruit, juices and tea and coffee are available.
Dinner at The Garden Terrace is a romantic affair, especially if you choose to sit outside where the gardens are lit up. Highly recommended is the Chicken Lababdar, a traditional Northern Indian dish hailing from the Punjab region. The Second Executive Chef explained that at Maiden’s they make their own spice mixtures, meaning the food is spiced but never heavy. They even grow many of their own salads and herbs on site!
After a long Delhi day, you can head to the Cavalry Bar for a sundowner during their happy hour before moving onto the Curzon Room for a traditional Indian meal. Named after the Viceroy Lord Curzon, whose wife caused a tremendous sensation when she wore a striking ‘Peacock Dress’ to the 1903 Delhi Durbar. Dishes you can try at the Curzon Room are from recipes passed down generations, such as the famous ‘Railway Mutton Curry’ that guests would have eaten since the hotel opened its doors.
Location
Maidens Hotel is situated in an affluent neighbourhood, sheltered from the hustle and noise of the centre. In Delhi a guide and a driver are recommended to take you around, so all of the sights are accessible. The Kashmiri Gate is close by and you can visit all that Delhi has to offer such as Humayun’s Tomb, the Qutub Minar or the Red Fort.
