Uni Restaurant & Bar: a sophisticated casual fine diner launched in Canggu last month.

Uni is the latest fine diner to open in Canggu by Urchin’s former star chef Steven Skelly and drinks guru Nicolas Lento who both remain integral parts of  Mexicola Group including Luigi’s, Da Maria, and Mexicola. Serving up Asian-inspired dishes seven days a week, the sophisticated restaurant is open for dinner between 6.00 pm to 10.30 pm and remains open until late for drinks in the cocktail bar.

The design-savvy restaurant boast 70 seats with an open kitchen where guests can enjoy their dinner at the bar whilst watching the kitchen staff preparing the dishes. The earthy colours and elegant furnishing is given a nice edge with contemporary wall art by French artist Yaz which gives the fine-dining space a more casual feel. There is, however, nothing casual about the delicious dishes being served which is a contemporary twist on Asian inspired dishes. There’s an a la carte menu as well as a tasting menu paired with an impressive drinks list. The five cousre tasting menu is a wonderful option for those intersted in trying a selection of smaller dishes. The snapper carpaccio served with fernt tips, dill oil and fennel pollen paired with a the Italian 2015 Donnafugata ‘lighea’ zibibbo from Sicily is outstanding. Another suberb dish is the steamed coral trout erved with ginger, shallots and seasme oil serveid with an Alsace wine. Another popular dish is the passionfruit souffle which is delightful and served with extra passionfruit sauce to make it even better!

Although being a fine diner, the former Urchin duo has managed to create a relaxed and comfortable space. The service is outstanding led by Nico, who’s worked in the restaurant business since the tender age of 13. Steven who’s in charge of the kitchen is running a smooth operation including training several local talents.

Who is Uni for?

It’s not hard to see how Uni has quickly become a favourite among locals and expats, in fact, many guests come for a meal several times per week. The restaurant is great for a romantic tête-à-tête, special celebrations or simply for a delicious mid-week treat. Strategically located in between Canggu and Seminyak there’s no reason to not visit this gem of a restaurant during your next Bali visit.
