Le Méridien Melbourne Review 2026: A New York State of Mind in the CBD

There are hotels that reflect the city they inhabit, mirroring its architecture and local rhythms. Then there are hotels that arrive from somewhere else entirely, bringing their own distinct geography with them. Le Méridien Melbourne sits firmly in the latter category.

Positioned in the heart of Melbourne’s Central Business District, the property places guests within easy walking distance of the city’s most beloved bookshops, luxury boutiques, and iconic shopping arcades. It serves as an ideal base for leisurely afternoons spent browsing Collins Street or exploring the laneways. Yet, the moment one steps inside, the mood shifts quickly into something more composed, cinematic, and unmistakably international.

Arrival: Cinematic Glamour & European Restraint

Inside, the design language speaks a global dialect. There is a clear New York influence in its personality—confident, clean-lined, and energetic—softened significantly by a dose of European restraint. It does not try to blend into the Melbourne surroundings; instead, it holds its own space within them with quiet authority.

Down in the lobby, the café adds another layer to this hybrid identity. It possesses a distinctly European feel, evoking the morning rhythm of a Milanese or Parisian hotel where coffee and light bites encourage lingering rather than rushing. The air is often filled with the promise of Mumm champagne, inviting guests to toast the day before it has truly begun. This softens the pace of the urban bustle outside, creating a sanctuary of calm sophistication.

The Palace Suite: A Private City Residence

We stayed in the Palace Suite, which set the tone for the entire experience. It felt less like a traditional hotel suite and more like a private city residence—scaled generously, designed with intent, and clearly made for living rather than merely staying.

What struck us most was how seamlessly it functioned as a full apartment within the hotel. With two separate bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, expansive living zones, and generous proportions throughout, it created an immediate sense of ease and separation. It is an ideal configuration for families or longer stays where space is a non-negotiable luxury. A Smeg coffee machine and kitchenette appliances sat ready for use, alongside shelves of fascinating, up-to-date art books that begged to be browsed during quiet moments.

High ceilings and wide interiors encouraged movement between spaces rather than containment. The luxury here came through proportion, light, and restraint rather than over-styling. It carried the feeling of a New York penthouse, softened with European composure. From the suite, views opened up across Melbourne’s architectural landscape—a tapestry of glass, heritage lines, and modern high-rises blending into one another. Upon sunrise, we witnessed hot air balloons floating past heritage landmarks like Parliament House and the Old Treasury Building, anchoring the stay in both history and modern rhythm.

By day, the space was bathed in natural light, open and expansive. By night, it shifted into something atmospheric and intimate, with city lights spilling into the room to create a natural setting for slow evenings in. What stood out most was how liveable it felt—impressive in scale, yet grounded in comfort. A space you could occupy without ever feeling confined.

Dining & Drinks: The Descent into Dolly

That same sense of international polish carries through the wider hotel. Service throughout reflects this tone—smooth, efficient, and unforced. Everything runs as it should, allowing the experience to feel seamless from arrival to departure.

One of the standout features remains the pool area. Elevated above the city, it creates a suspended pause within the urban landscape. Rather than escaping the city, it frames it—Melbourne stretching out below in a softened, almost cinematic way.

The bar carries the hotel’s New York identity most clearly. Dim lighting, sleek finishes, and a moody, low-lit atmosphere give it the feel of a downtown hotel bar. It is designed for evenings rather than transitions—spaces where the night naturally builds.

For dinner, we ventured down via the opulent spiral staircase to Dolly Restaurant. The descent feels intentional, almost like crossing into another layer of the hotel, where the lighting softens and the energy shifts into something warmer and more animated. Here, the New York influence is felt but feels less about restraint and more about presence and mood.

Rose-gold lighting washed across the dining room, giving everything a warm, intimate glow. It’s a space designed for experience as much as food—stylish without feeling staged, full of subtle energy. We ordered the signature steak and ribs special with scrumptious chips and salad. The standout was undoubtedly the rib dish—rich, tender, and genuinely melt-in-the-mouth. It was the sort of plate that doesn’t need interpretation because the execution speaks for itself. Finished with a divine crème brûlée, the meal was an experience to linger in long after the plates were cleared.

Throughout the stay, the strongest impression was the movement between worlds. Outside is Melbourne in its familiar, quirky rhythm. Inside, that shifts into something more global—New York in its confidence, Europe in its refinement. But the hotel doesn’t imitate either; it builds its own identity from both.

The Verdict: Space Within the City

By the end of the stay, what lingered wasn’t just the scale of the suite or the quality of the dining, but the sense of having been somewhere slightly outside its geography. Le Méridien Melbourne is defined by atmosphere, proportion, and presence. It blends New York energy, European refinement, and Melbourne’s urban backdrop into something self-assured and distinctly international. It understands luxury not as stillness, but as space within the city. And it holds that idea confidently.
