Venue and Atmosphere
Set in the historic Grade II listed former St. Olave’s Grammar School’s impressive assembly hall at The LaLiT Hotel, dining at Baluchi feels a little bit like being in a Harry Potter movie at Hogwarts. The high ceilings and the impressive hanging candelabras create an almost church-like heavenly atmosphere, however, the friendly and warm staff together with the soft lounge music in the background brings things down to earth. Instead of being daunting the large magnificent space feels intimate and relaxed.
Food & Drinks
Baluchi‘s food is sublime. The impressive pan-Indian menu has labelled the courses ‘Term-One’, ‘Mid-Term’ and ‘Term Break’ as a nod to the hotel’s past as a boys grammar school.
Serving dishes with a contemporary take on traditional Indian and Pakistani dishes the menu takes inspiration from the major food regions and the ingredients are organic and locally sourced.
The man behind the innovative and modern menu is Executive Chef Santosh Shah who previously held crucial positions at the Michelin starred Benaras and Dishoom.
Some of his creations include the lamb chops served with smoked aubergine, anchovy chutney and beetroot crisp and the Tandori octopus with clay oven roasted baby potato, coriander chutney, and puffed quinoa which are both excellent dishes to start off with.
The cannon on lamb served with cornbread, roasted root vegetable, garlic spinach mash and masala cashew crumble is delicious as well as the free-range corn-fed chicken breast with ginger curry and spinach.
Any Indian meal would be incomplete without the Naan bread and here at the Naanery the bread is freshly baked in the tandoor oven and served in bread baskets.
For dessert the Saffron infused compressed tandoori pineapple cardamom ice-cream, pink peppercorn tuille is a real winner together with the home-made ice cream with interesting flavours including chai tea, rosewater, saffron and pistachio.
