Memmo Baleeira

Memmo Baleeira, a laidback wellness-focused hotel in Portugal’s famous surf town Sagres

Lux Nomade checks into Memmo Baleeira, a four-star boutique hotel in the world-famous surf town Sagres located on the most western tip of mainland Europe. The laidback and family-friendly resort offers 144 rooms including one and two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes. Facilities include a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor swimming swimming pool with magnificent ocean views, as well as a heated indoor pool with a spa, and a gym. Children can enjoy a kid’s club, and families can go biking or take surf classes at the hotel’s surf centre.

Location

Memmo Baleeira, the laidback 4-star  hotel is located in Sagres and is one of Memmo Hotels’ three properties, sister hotels Memmo Alfama and Memmo Principe Real, are both located in Lisbon. The white modern design-led building is perched on the waterfront of the beautiful (but windy, hence being a surf spot) western part of the Algarve.

Located on the outskirts of the small surf town Sagres, the hotel overlooks the village and is easy to find and offers free parking for hotel guests arriving by car. The building cascades down the hill and the bright and airy reception is located on the third floor. The staff is welcoming and the service is relaxed and non-stuffy. The reception area opens up to a relaxing space filled with round sofas, chairs and a cosy library.

The light-filled restaurant ‘Fornaria Memmo’ is located on the same floor and offers a spectacular view over the windswept coastline. The kitchen focuses on regional produce and local dishes.

Family-friendly Suites

The hotel’s 144 rooms, offering either garden or sea view, are bright, minimalistic with white walls and decorated with earthy, natural and sand-coloured tones and the beds feature blue-and-white throws traditionally crafted from pure mountain wool by sustainable Portuguese brand Burel.

The one-bedroom suites are spacious and tastefully decorated, perfect for families of four with the sofa bed in the living area making up two additional beds. The kitchenette is fully equipped with plates, cutlery, wine glasses, cutting board, wine and can openers and even bread knives. There are coffee capsules from Delta Q (two capsules are included per stay) and an exotic mix of teas from ‘the pur terroir’. The minibar selection is fairly limited, however, the large fridge offers plenty of room for families staying for several days to stock up on their favourite drinks and snacks from the local shops.

The suites feature sliding doors from the bedroom and living area opening to a large terrace overlooking the garden and the bay.

The bathroom features a spacious rain shower and dental kits are available upon request.

The Breakfast

The daily breakfast is served between 7.00 – 10.30.

In addition to a traditional breakfast buffet, guests can order eggs to their liking.

The baked goods include the famous Portuguese ‘pastel de nata’ which is incredibly delicious. And for those looking to stay on track with their wellness diet, there’s fresh fruit, detox juice and vegetables available.

The staff is friendly, warm and helpful and there are plenty of baby highchairs scattered throughout the dining area making it easy for families travelling with little ones.

Activities for an active family

The highlight of the hotel is the outdoor pool area. The heated swimming pool is framed by a sun-drenched deck dotted with comfortable sun loungers. During the summer months, the poolside bar offers refreshments for the whole family. For those looking for a more quiet spot, there are several sun lounges placed in white cubes offering privacy and a great view of the bay whilst protecting from the wind.

Parents can relax and unwind in the wellness area offering spa treatments, a Turkish bath, a gym and a heated indoor pool. Children can enjoy the comprehensive children’s play areas complete with a climbing wall, trampolines, and bike and surfboard stations.

As for a day activity, the entire family can enjoy a scenic bike ride exploring the wild Atlantic coast (bikes are available at the hotel’s bike station for 15 euros for 1 day and 8 euros for 2 hours) by following one of the many trails along the coastline. Lunch boxes are available to order for those planning on spending the day out in nature (13 euros for a kids box and 15 euros for adults).

The pool area offers a magnificent view

Wellness focus

In addition to offering a wide range of sports activities to keep guests fit and active during their stay, the hotel emphasises the importance of healthy food and sleep which are part of its three core pillars.

Guests can find a wellness booklet in the room with helpful tips and information about how to stay active, how to sleep well, and how to eat healthy. Each section has a QR code which links to gentle morning stretches, yoga sessions, breathing techniques and guided meditations.

Who is this hotel for?

The hotel is incredibly family-friendly with one-bedroom suits and fully equipped kitchenettes perfect for young families looking for a comfortable and active holiday. Given its unique location, the resort is popular with nature lovers looking to explore the spectacular coastline right on the doorstep. And, of course, surf enthusiasts who are flocking to the area will enjoy a comfortable stay at Memmo Baleeira.

Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare Sometimes luxury shows up quietly, without fanfare or a grand lobby to announce its presence. That is exactly how Finca Victoria arrived in Sa Riera—a restored estate where the pine-covered hills and Mediterranean set the tone before you even step inside.

Opened in 2025 after careful renovation of a historic property, it captures something rare on the Costa Brava: the feeling of having discovered a corner that hasn't yet lost its soul. Just thirty-eight rooms, all adults over fourteen, spread across what feels more like a private summer house than a resort determined to impress from the first moment. The central cloister anchors everything, with warm stone arches, ceramics, and Catalan tuff flooring that gives you a sense of place without leaning too hard on nostalgia.

The food alone tells you this was done with intention. AlKostat del Mar, led by chef Jordi Vilà, serves seasonal Catalan cooking rooted in local produce and fire. A rice dish can become the reason you're traveling somewhere new. Breakfast stretches from eight until eleven with made-to-order hot options alongside a carefully edited buffet—eggs Benedict with salmon, avocado toast, regional specialties like black butifarra with beans—that makes rushing feel unnecessary.

But what lingers is the room itself. In our Terrace Suite, nearly sixty square metres overlooked both sea and the rolling hills of Begur. The bathroom held both bathtub and rainfall shower. An outdoor shower faced sideways toward the horizon. These details don't shout; they settle into your memory slowly.

Spa appointments run through the Victoria Wellness Spa with water circuits, saunas, jacuzzis, and sensory treatments—all requiring advance booking, which somehow makes the peace even sweeter when you arrive. Morning yoga happens inside one of the suites, sunlight filling the space as you ground yourself into the day rather than race through it.

There is a complimentary shuttle to Begur village until late evening, and the beach is literally a short walk away. Private boat trips can be arranged for up to six people. Paddleboards, loungers, anything on the water the hotel can help coordinate through external partners. Yet even with
