Hujan Locale in Ubud is a 1930s inspired Indonesian restaurant inspired by Old Jakarta.
Hujan Locale, located in Bali’s spiritual capital of Ubud, celebrates Indonesian food and takes guests on a historical journey back to Old Jakarta.
While Ubud may have a reputation for its abundance of rice paddies and yoga studios, it’s the district’s passion for food which is fast gaining attention. One of Ubud’s most popular restaurants is Hujan Locale sitting on bustling Jalan Sri Widari which is a 1930s-inspired Sarong Group venue by Will Meyrick (other restaurants include Sarong, Billy Ho and Mama San) that opened in 2014.
The restaurant’s interior design is a nod to Old Jakarta with wooden beams, wooden furniture, black and white photographies and green plants creating a colonial vibe. The upstairs dining area has 30 seats and is where dinner is served daily. Downstairs on street level guests can enjoy relaxed bar-style dining served alongside exotic cocktails.
All dinners at Hujan Locale starts with the complimentary rempyek kacang which are crispy Indonesian rice flour cracker with peanuts served with sambal hijau, a green chilli sauce. The crackers are flavoursome and the dipping sauce is spicey but hit all the notes.
For a starter, the Sundanese dumplings are a great selection of dumplings which have been steamed, boiled or fried. The Siobak Singaraja is the famous pork belly which has been cured over three days and is one of the favourite dishes on the menu. A personal favourite was the Ikan Asap Mangut and the 48 Hours Rawon which is a tea-smoked barramundi cooked in Hujan’s own smoker with ginger flower simmered in coconut milk. The fish was cooked to perfection and had a lovely earthy and smokey flavour. For dessert, the salted caramel popcorn ice cream served with caramelized bananas and burned Italian meringue was a real winner. The dish felt more ‘Italian’ but nevertheless it tasted fantastic.
In addition to the food menu, there’s a wine list with a great selection of international labels including a good Australian merlot. Although the real hero of the evening was Hujan Locale’s Signature Gin & Tonic which is Tanqueray gin served with Fever-Tree tonic in a bucket of dry ice and garnished with purple flowers and rosemary.
Hujan Locale with its beautiful interior design, interesting Indonesian dishes and superb cocktails is an excellent restaurant to check out if you are in Ubud.
