Top unusual attractions to check in Southampton

Southampton is a popular city on the south coast of England. With its rich history, beautiful parks, and bustling port, it’s no wonder it attracts a large number of visitors each year. Whether travelling to explore the natural beauty of the New Forest, visiting on the way to see the Isle of Wight, or setting off on the best all-inclusive cruise in Southampton, there are loads of reasons to visit this excellent city and lots to do while you are here.

Best of all, there are many hidden gems in Southampton that you may not know about. From unusual historical attractions to amazing interactive experiences and exhibitions, a visit to Southampton is packed full of wonderful things to do. Here are some of the top unusual attractions to check out during your next visit.

The Medieval Merchant’s House

Tucked away down a narrow street in the historic city centre, the Medieval Merchant’s House is a beautifully restored building that dates back to the 14th century. The house is a perfect example of the type of home that wealthy merchants would have lived in during the Middle Ages. A visit lets you take a step back in time, exploring the house and seeing what life was like for the people who lived here over 600 years ago.

The Titanic Trail

Southampton has a special connection to the tragic tail of the Titanic, as it was the port from which the ill-fated vessel set sail on its maiden (and only) voyage. The Titanic Trail is a self-guided tour that tells the story of the Titanic from its construction to its icy demise, by taking you through the city on a charming walk via memorials, plaques, and historic spots linked to the ship. It is a fascinating, poignant tour and one that is well worth taking.

Solent Sky Museum

While much of Southampton’s attractions are focused on the sea and its maritime history, the city played a huge part in the history of aviation too, and the Solent Sky Museum is the best place to explore its role in the story of manned flight. The museum is home to a wonderful collection of vintage aircraft, as well as a variety of exhibitions covering the history of aviation in Southampton and the surrounding area, from the early days of flying to modern commercial jets.

Netley Abbey

Netley Abbey is a ruined medieval monastery that dates back to the 13th century. The abbey has a fascinating history – closed and dismantled during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, it was converted into a manor house for a wealthy lord, before falling into disrepair again in the 19th century. It was also a place of inspiration for a series of Romantic poets and writers, including George Keate, Jane Austen, and William Sotheby. The ruins are located in a picturesque park overlooking Southampton Water, making it the perfect spot for a picnic or a relaxing walk. The ruins are well-preserved, and visitors can explore the site and imagine what life was like for the monks who once lived here.

The Spitfire Experience

The Spitfire Experience is a unique attraction that allows visitors to experience what it was like to fly a Spitfire, one of the most famous fighter planes of World War II. The experience includes a flight simulator that puts you in the cockpit of a Spitfire and allows you to fly over the English countryside.

Southampton is a city with a rich history and plenty of unusual attractions to explore. Whether you’re interested in aviation, medieval history, or the Titanic, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check out these top unusual attractions during your next visit.
