Octant Douro’s New House Collection: A Luxury Hideaway Perfect for Families Who Want Space, Style, and Privacy

If you’ve ever dreamed of a family holiday where you can unwind in luxury without tiptoeing past hotel corridors or squeezing into a single hotel room, the new House Collection at Octant Douro might just be what you’re looking for.

Tucked into the terraced hills of Castelo de Paiva, above Portugal’s winding Douro River, these new one- and two-bedroom homes offer the kind of comfort, privacy, and personal space that families (or groups of friends) often crave — but rarely find at high-end hotels.

Each house is its own private retreat, complete with a living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private garden. Some even come with their own plunge pool — ideal for cooling off in the afternoon sun while the kids nap or play safely nearby. It’s a setup that works just as well for multi-generational trips as it does for couples with young kids, or even groups of friends who want space to spread out.

The Best of Both Worlds: Hotel Perks, Villa Privacy

What sets the House Collection apart is the blend of full-service hotel amenities with the freedom of a private villa. Want a quiet night in? A private chef can prepare dinner in your kitchen — or even fire up a BBQ in the garden. Need help coordinating the day? You can book a personal assistant, or bring in a yoga instructor or massage therapist to your outdoor space. The hotel’s spa, restaurant, and pool are still right there when you want them — but you’re never tied to a schedule.

It’s this flexibility that makes it so appealing for families who want a break from the usual routine, without giving up comfort or style.

Space to Breathe, Inside and Out

Design-wise, the houses are beautiful — modern but warm, with natural tones, Portuguese materials, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to views of the river and hills. Architect Cristina Jorge de Carvalho aimed to create something “refined but connected to the land,” and it shows. The houses feel tucked into the landscape, not just built on it.

There are 20 residences in total — 16 one-bedroom houses and 4 two-bedroom split-level options, with private pools in select units. Whether you’re travelling with kids, parents, or both, there’s a layout that works — and enough space for everyone to wind down in peace.

For Families Who Want More Than Just a Room

For parents, the House Collection offers something rare: the ability to relax without constant compromise. There’s space to cook or heat up food, room for kids to nap undisturbed, and areas to spend time together — or apart — without being confined to a single hotel room.

And when it’s time to explore, there’s no shortage of things to do. Paddleboarding on the Douro, hiking through nearby nature reserves, or having cheese and wine tastings arranged right at your doorstep — it’s all possible. The hotel’s newly renovated À TERRA restaurant is also on hand for when you want to dine out but keep it easy.

The House Collection at Octant Douro is perfect for travellers who want the service and polish of a luxury hotel, but with the freedom, space, and privacy that families — or anyone, really — often need to truly relax.

Rates start at £356 per night in low season.

You don't stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole for You don't stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole for the check-in experience—you stay because 1901 wrote better architecture than most cities can build today. Ten years after Graham Greene walked these halls, and they haven't missed a beat. The Opera House steps, the wartime tunnels underfoot, the Angelina salon where cocktails taste like history—they're all part of a legacy that doesn't need to shout to be heard. Read @janoahvankekem ´s review from his recent stay at @sofitellegendmetropolehanoi for @luxnomade on why this Hanoi icon still sets the standard.
Three hours from Hanoi. Seven hectares on the edge Three hours from Hanoi. Seven hectares on the edge of Ha Long Bay. Two buildings designed like traditional fishing vessels. One rooftop dinner that pairs Kagoshima Wagyu with Nuits-Saint-Georges. The math checks out. What makes this property exceptional isn't the awards or the price points—it's the willingness to let simple things (poolside pizza, afternoon tea with a limestone backdrop, quiet mornings at the Club Lounge) carry as much weight as the five-course tasting menus. Sometimes luxury is knowing when not to try too hard. Read @janoahvankekem ´s full review of @intercontinental_halongbay for @luxnomade on the website.
