The Modernist, Thessaloniki: A Hotel Review

The Modernist, a stylish boutique hotel in Thessaloniki combines old-world grace with casual luxury set in a beautiful 1920’s heritage building.  And, the warm and friendly service is just as delightful as the delicious food, interesting design, and superior location.

With a sister hotel in Athens, The Modernist in Thessaloniki, a five-story renovated boutique hotel in the heart of the city is chic, welcoming, and fun. Located just a short stroll from the seafront promenade and 13 km from the airport, the 4-star hotel which has been restored in a minimalist, yet sensual style is just a short stroll from everything Thessaloniki has to offer. Surrounded by trendy boutiques, high-street shops, bakeries, and fancy restaurants and bars, all within walking distance, the location is superb!

The Rooms

There are 41 rooms (small to X-large) spread over 7 floors, with a double bed or two single beds. All rooms are modern with a similar design fitted with flat-screen TVs, open wardrobes, a mini-bar, a safe deposit, Marshall speakers, a Nespresso machine, air-conditioning, and a modern bathroom with a rain shower. Complimentary WiFi is provided throughout the hotel and some rooms have a balcony.

The large room feels spacious and the futon-styled king-size bed has quality sheets and a comfortable mattress. There’s even a pillow menu available, although in my case I was very pleased with the pillows at hand.

The bathroom is modern with white tiles and black fittings. The rainshower is great and the organic toiletries smell fantastic and are presented in large bottles in order to reduce single-use plastic.

A nice touch is the hotel’s own wine and the local macaroons which are both delicious!

The Modernist

The Breakfast

Thessaloniki is famous for its food and the breakfast is a testament to the city’s fantastic pastries, fresh produce, and wonderful cakes, yoghurts, Greek baked goods, and jams. All ingredients are carefully selected and prepared in the open-plan kitchen. There’s an espresso machine and a great selection of teas as well as freshly squeezed juice.

Served daily from 7:00 – 10:30 on the rooftop terrace, the breakfast is not to be missed. Ensure you arrive early if you want to secure a table on the outdoor terrace since it’s filling up quickly.

The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant which isn’t an inconvenience with the many eateries just around the corner.

The Modernist

The Service

The service is casual yet professional. The helpful staff, wearing fashionable uniforms designed by local fashion designers,  at the 24/4 reception is excited to share the city’s best restaurants, shops, and activities and a map is provided to help guests explore the city on foot.

The friendly staff can also assist with parking in a nearby private parking house which is charged per day. Additional services available include massage (on request), and a discount at a local gym.

Who is this hotel for?

The Modernist is the perfect hotel for couples or solo travellers looking for a stylish, friendly, and convenient base whilst exploring the city. The X-Large and Family rooms are also great for larger groups or families.

You don't stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole for You don't stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole for the check-in experience—you stay because 1901 wrote better architecture than most cities can build today. Ten years after Graham Greene walked these halls, and they haven't missed a beat. The Opera House steps, the wartime tunnels underfoot, the Angelina salon where cocktails taste like history—they're all part of a legacy that doesn't need to shout to be heard. Read @janoahvankekem ´s review from his recent stay at @sofitellegendmetropolehanoi for @luxnomade on why this Hanoi icon still sets the standard.
Three hours from Hanoi. Seven hectares on the edge Three hours from Hanoi. Seven hectares on the edge of Ha Long Bay. Two buildings designed like traditional fishing vessels. One rooftop dinner that pairs Kagoshima Wagyu with Nuits-Saint-Georges. The math checks out. What makes this property exceptional isn't the awards or the price points—it's the willingness to let simple things (poolside pizza, afternoon tea with a limestone backdrop, quiet mornings at the Club Lounge) carry as much weight as the five-course tasting menus. Sometimes luxury is knowing when not to try too hard. Read @janoahvankekem ´s full review of @intercontinental_halongbay for @luxnomade on the website.
