Hotel Review: Eugenia de Montijo Autograph Collection, Toledo, Spain
The former home of Eugenia de Montijo, the last empress consort of the French as the wife of Napoleon III, the historic luxury 5-star boutique hotel with a crystal dome lobby located in the ancient quarter of Toledo, surrounded by archaeological remains dating back to the Romans, opened its doors in 2006.
Location
Eugenia de Montijo is located on the Plaza del Juego de Pelota, a small and quiet square within the city walls of the historical UNESCO world heritage city of Toledo, only an hour’s drive from Madrid. The hotel can be accessed by car (car parking available) and is only 200 meters from the famous cathedral, with most of the main sights within an easy walking radius. The Plaza Zocodover, the main square, is a 10-minute walk along the main shopping street.
Design & Style
The hotel was remodelled in 2018, giving the former palace a more modern look while retaining many original features. The design-duo behind the transformation wanted to celebrate Eugenia de Montijo and her life has been displayed around the hotel from the large modern portrait hanging above the bar to the breakfast area being inspired by her dressing room with wallpaper showcasing her love for shooting.
Walking through the large wooden door, the high ceilings showcase the original wooden beams which have all been handpainted. The modern receptionist area is welcoming and elegant and the check-in process smooth.
The Hotel Rooms
The hotel has 40 rooms, including two junior suites and one suite. All rooms are decorated with neutral colours, wooden floorboards, high ceilings and marble bathrooms. The Junior Suite 204 benefits from large windows facing the square, two sofas and a king-size bed. There is also an espresso machine, bottled water and the spacious bathroom with both a shower and bathtub has a great selection of amenities including hairdryer, toothbrushes and handmade soap bars. All rooms have fast Wi-Fi.
Restaurant Frederico
In Restaurant Frederico, onsite restaurant, the design shifts from, the feminine design theme throughout the hotel, to a more masculine style with an upscale library-tavern vibe.
The à la carte menu highlights the authentic Spanish cuisine with seasonal specialities. Try the Iberian ham with Manchego cheese and pork cheeks with red wine sauce with the hotel’s own Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Lobby Bar
The heart of the hotel is the magnificent Lobby Bar with marble floors, a majestic glass dome and turquoise stone table tops (Eugenia de Montijo’s favourite colour). This is the perfect spot to unwind with a refreshing Gin & Tonic, or any of the many handcrafted cocktails, before dinner.
The Breakfast
Breakfast is served from 7 am to 11 am on weekdays and from 8 am until noon at weekends. Expect to be greeted by a waiter and seated and enjoy your Costa Rican coffee of choice whilst waiting for the breakfast which is served buffet-style. Ibérico ham, Manchego cheese, fruit, pastries, bread, muffins, Tortilla and yoghurt is beautifully presented on a wooden board which is a convenient and fun way to enjoy the breakfast.
