How to design your home office like an interior architect
Paris based Studio MHNA’s founder and interior architects, Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet, have published a new book, sharing the exclusive spaces they have designed for homes, hotels, spas, restaurants and resorts around the world. At Lux Nomade, we took the opportunity to catch up with Marc and Nicolas to pick their brains on how to design a stylish, yet functional, home office.
What are the key pieces of furniture to invest in for a home office space?
When we are at home, we can easily imagine a world that is far removed from the mundane world of the office. At home, we think of furniture that will give soul to a workspace, exactly the opposite of the type of furniture you find in the office. Contemporary, vintage or classic, we look for pieces of furniture that create a narrative in order to create an atmosphere of wellbeing and comfort. For example, a 19th Century Chinese table, a desk from the 60s or a bookcase from the 70s. Our most recent design ‘Nidum’ are contemporary office pods, perfect for isolating in.

What are your favourite fabrics, textures and plants for a home office?
We love wood to bring warmth to a space, leather to bring elegance and comfort, velvet for its softness and then chromed and polished metal or even bronzes to bring everything to life. In terms of plants, large ferns or other exotic plants come to mind, they help create a serene environment where one can think clearly.
What are the best ways to keep Organised?
To stay organized, it is important to have enough space on your desk. Now that we mainly all work on a tablet or a computer, we do not as much desk space as before. On the other hand, for those who still love to work on paper, it helps to have space around you to put your stuff. Invest in storage such as desk drawers and shelves that can go up behind you so that everything has a space.
Which Colours Are most suitable for a home office and why?
For those of us who love using colour in our projects, we think black, white and more ‘natural’ colours are great for concentration and can help to stimulate ideas.
What are suitable accessories to bring an office space to life?
For book lovers, having a full bookshelf can be a great companion and really bring a space to life. Artwork, whether it be contemporary or modern, serious or funny, can be immersive, forcing you to question yourself and widen your fields of vision, stimulating ideas and improving productivity in the workspace.
