Bawah Reserve is only accessible by private seaplane from Singapore making it one of the world’s most secluded hideaways.
Nestled in an ecological utopia comprising six islands, three lagoons and 13 beaches in Indonesia’s Anambas Archipelago, northeast of Singapore, Bawah Reserve is one of the world’s most secluded hideaways. Only accessible by private seaplane from Singapore, and accommodating a maximum of 75 guests, Bawah Reserve is a sanctuary to slow down and unwind in; a place where luxury is about being reacquainted with nature.
Eco-friendly approach
The environmentally-conscious resort rests in a previously uninhabited marine conservation area in sheltered, carefree isolation, and is enveloped by lush tropical greenery, unbelievably clear water and coral reefs.
Created by renowned Singaporean architect, Sim Boon Yong, every component of Bawah Reserve was made entirely by hand, using environmentally-friendly materials. Drawing inspiration from the natural terrain of the Anambas Islands, the five-star resort – and its 11 overwater bungalows, 21 beachfront suites overlooking a pristine lagoon, and three garden suites surrounded by lush greenery – blends seamlessly into its remarkable surroundings.
The resort’s eco-friendly approach extends across all operations, from its permaculture to its products: ocean-friendly sun cream, eco-friendly laundry detergent, and no plastic bottles. All waste is recycled; all paper is mulched; food waste is composted, and crushed glass is used in the water filtering process.
‘Asia’s eco-luxury private island’
Since opening its doors in 2018, Bawah Reserve has captured the hearts of media and travellers alike, earning itself the alias ‘Asia’s eco-luxury private island’ and taking out a slate of international accolades, including a spot in the prestigious World Travel Magazine’s ‘luxury 50 list’ for 2018.
The Indonesian paradise is celebrated for its natural beauty and sustainability practices, as well as its impressive level of luxury, but a key chapter of the resort’s story that’s not commonly told is that of the prolific foundation it supports.
The Bawah Anambas Foundation was independently established in 2018 to rehabilitate and conserve the marine and terrestrial life across the six islands that make up Bawah Reserve, and the wider Anambas archipelago, which comprises more than 250 islands across seven sub-districts.
Working closely with local government; non-government organisations; academic and research institutions; as well as private organisations with the same ethos, the foundation manages a land-based conservation program and a marine conservation program aimed at protecting coral and fish on the surrounding barrier reef.
Activities and Dining
The resort caters to intrepid travellers with an appetite for indulgence as well as paradise seekers looking for relaxation, and all activities showcase the region’s astounding natural beauty. From snorkelling and diving through striking underwater worlds; to stand up paddle boarding across the lagoons; gliding through crystal clear waters in a kayak; and sailing around the islands, there are plenty of aquatic experiences to enjoy.
For guests who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, the hiking at Bawah Reserve is exceptional, as is stargazing at night. There’s also an infinity pool and a beachside bar, which is the perfect spot to watch the sunset over a cocktail.
Bawah offers the true meaning of all-inclusive luxury and is the only retreat in Asia to include complimentary bespoke all-day dining; picnics on the beach; one wellness treatment per villa, per day; guest experiences and transport via its private amphibious seaplane – the most thrilling way to arrive at any destination.
