Find Your Pause: How an Organic Farm in Extremadura Is Helping People Slow Down and Rediscover What Matters
In the heart of La Vera, Extremadura, a small organic farm called Los Confites is offering something many of us have forgotten how to do: stop. Not for long—just long enough to breathe, take in the countryside, and remember what really matters. This November, Los Confites is launching PARENTHESIS, a new program of wellbeing and reflection that begins with a three-day experience called “Losing Fear.” It’s designed for anyone who feels that life is moving a little too fast and wants to find a simpler rhythm again.
The idea grew naturally out of the story of the farm itself. María Franco and Javier Arenzana, who founded Los Confites seven years ago, first came to La Vera looking for a quiet place to rest. What they discovered instead was a calling. Together, they restored a series of old tobacco-drying barns, turned the surrounding fields into organic gardens, and created a welcoming haven where people could come to reconnect with the land—and with themselves.
Their daughter Lucía, a chef trained in healthy and seasonal cooking, joined the project soon after, bringing a thoughtful approach to food that celebrates what’s local and fresh. Meals at Los Confites are simple but full of care, cooked largely with ingredients grown on-site. “We’ve learned that everyone needs a parenthesis in their lives,” María explains. “A moment to pause, to be looked after, and to think clearly again.”
That philosophy is at the heart of Losing Fear, which will take place from November 14 to 16 in the peaceful landscape of Jarandilla de la Vera. Over three days, participants will take part in a carefully planned program that combines healthy eating, gentle physical activity, time outdoors, and guided reflection. There’s also space for conversation and rest—two things that too often get lost in everyday life. Each participant receives a personalized plan and a follow-up session online, so the benefits of the experience can continue once they return home.

The team behind the program brings together professionals who share a belief in the power of steady effort and clear thinking. Fernando Sartorius, a personal trainer with decades of experience, leads the physical training sessions. María Kindelán, a specialist in sustainable nutrition, introduces participants to eating in a way that nourishes both body and mind. Nacho Dean, a naturalist and explorer known for his long walking journeys, guides moments of connection with nature. Eva Orna, a professional dancer, teaches movement classes that anyone can follow, regardless of age or experience. And for those ready to face their own fears more directly, there’s a special session with Julio de la Iglesia, a former bomb disposal expert who now works as an executive coach, sharing what he has learned about courage and calm under pressure.
Everything about the retreat is designed to be small-scale and genuine. Places are limited to keep the atmosphere personal, and every detail—from the meals to the schedule—is crafted to encourage rest and reflection rather than performance or comparison. The price is €850 (VAT included), covering accommodation, all meals, and the full three-day program.
For the team at Los Confites, Losing Fear marks the beginning of a new chapter. With PARENTHESIS, they hope to expand their idea of “conscious hospitality”—a way of welcoming guests that values honesty, warmth, and connection over luxury or trend. More editions are already in the works, each focusing on a different theme of everyday wellbeing.
For families, couples, or individuals looking for a wholesome escape from busy routines, this might be just the kind of pause that brings a fresh sense of balance.
