Ovolo Woolloomooloo in Sydney is a fun, flirty and fabulous hotel.
80s rock-n-roll with a good splash of wellness mixed with wow-factor rooms, amazing staff and a breakfast with all the trimmings. Ovolo Woolloomooloo is just as fabulous as you might think and the groovy vibe and generosity make this a stellar Sydney hotel.
Ovolo Woolloomooloo’s Location
Ovolo Woolloomooloo, part of the Ovolo Group which also includes Ovolo Nishi Canberra, is located in Sydney’s idyllic harbourside suburb of, yes you guessed it right – Woolloomoolloo. With only a short walk to the CBD and trendy Potts Point, the stylish hotel benfits from a prime location. Sydney airport is 23 kilometres away, a half-hour drive and King’s Cross station is a five-minute drive (or 15-minute walk) away. You could also catch any train to St James Station or Martin Place Station, then make the 15-minute walk through Hyde Park and the Domain or the Royal Botanical Garden. A valet parking service is also available for $50 a night.
The Interior Style & Rooms at Ovolo Woolloomooloo
Ovolo Woolloomooloo is positioned in the old and impressive Finger Wharf building dating back to 1912. Reimagined by award-winning architecture firm Hassell Studio and designer Matt Sheargold, the 100-year-old heritage-listed Finger Wharf building has been carefully renovated and the result is a young, energetic, glamourous, cheeky and accessible hotel.
Ovolo Woolloomooloo has managed to perfectly blend feminine and a masculine vibe and style throughout the 100 guest rooms and suites which are tastefully decorated in rich fabrics, state of the art electronics and stylish furniture. The loft room is spacious and it feels like the guests’ comfort has been front of mind when designing the rooms whilst at the same time ensuring the style and fabulousness haven’t been compromised. The large sofa is amazing and so is the king-sized bed with high-quality linen and super snuggly pillows (there’s even an option to get a body pillow delivered to your room). The bathroom has a stunning rain shower and the amenities are presented in large bottles attached to the wall rather than small single-use plastic bottles. Given the hotel’s fun and cheeky vibe, it’s not surprising to find a ‘squatty potty’ next to the loo. Other nice surprises include the free yoga mat for guests to keep, the loot bag filled with goodies and the cosy bathrobes.
In terms of technology Ovolo does not fall short. There’s an iPad Mini, Apple TV, phone chargers and, of course, Alexa which is linked to an impressive surround system to get the party started. For me who doesn’t have the clever device at home, I found myself getting totally carried away with enthusiasm as I could hear myself command of ‘Alexa, play Cold Plays’ new album’, ‘Alexa turn up the volume’ (I can only hope the guests next door shared the same music taste). And talking about party, let’s talk about the free mini-bar for a moment…
The Free Mini-Bar
..although over-priced hotel mini-bars seem to become a thing of the past, Ovolo’s free mini-bar takes things to a completely new level. Apart from offering free soft drinks, coffee, T2 and water, the mini-bar has sparkling wine and a refillable wine carafe with a note saying ‘fill me up in the bar downstairs’. At check-in, we are encouraged to call housekeeping to get the complimentary mini-bar restocked at any time. I’ve never felt to shameless raiding a mini-bar. The generous gesture really adds to the already fantastic experience. And talking about generosity, the free drinks don’t stop at the mini-bar…
Alibi Bar & Kitchen
…guests are invited to the hotel’s Alibi Bar for the ‘Social Hour’ between 5.30 pm – 6. 30 pm every evening for complimentary drinks! The drinks available are wines, Gin & Tonics, a special ‘Summer House-Cocktail’ and beers. The bar, which has an impressive interior design with indoor trees, plush furniture and cosy sectioned-off areas, has a buzzing and welcoming vibe. As we take our seats on the purple velvet armchairs we are served our wines together with complimentary nachos and dips. Whether you are already in good company or if you’re looking to make new friends, Alibi is a great place to start the evening. For guests who decide to keep the party going or for sleepy heads likes myself the good news is that the daily breakfast is served until 11 am. Beautifully presented in the restaurant area behind the bar (which is 100% plant-based), the buffet is a mix of bread, yoghurts, pastries, fruits, cold cuts and nice surprises such as croquettes and grilled garlic mushrooms. There’s an impressive Nespresso coffee machine and a great selection of teas to get your day started.
The Service at Ovolo Woolloomooloo
From arriving at the hotel to checking-out, Ovolo exceeds all expectations which include the service. The bellboys are quick to get our luggage out of the cab and the staff at the reception are warm, fun and friendly and the room is ready for us upon arrival. Throughout our stay, we feel very well looked after and the service felt very genuine with the staff striking the perfect balance between fun and professional. The staff in the bar were fantastic and so was housekeeping who swiftly assisted with a couple of jackets we forgot in the wardrobe.
